Leicestershire is one of several areas that the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is considering for ten new badger cull zones this year. They are expected to make their announcement on where has been selected next month.
There is a real chance that Leicestershire could be included for the first time. If this happens the badger cull will begin next month.
This means we only have days to change the Government’s mind.
Stop the badger cull coming to Leicestershire.
Over the last five years, Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust in partnership with Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has been running a successful vaccination programme in two strategic areas of Leicestershire. We’ve been proving that there is a much more humane way to tackle bovine tuberculosis that is also much cheaper per badger than culling. The ultimate aim of the project has always been to stop the badger cull being extended into our area.
If we don’t manage to change the Government’s mind over the next few days then we’ll see the unnecessary deaths of thousands of Leicestershire’s badgers over the next few months. We will have failed to save them.
