Ask your MP to stand up for nature
The UK Government has announced its next steps in response to the Nuclear Regulatory Review recommendations.
Thanks to 17,000 of you campaigning together, a worst‑case scenario has been avoided.
The announcement confirms that these vital legal protections will remain in place and there will be no new Planning Bill. Instead, the UK Government will issue guidance to address the review’s recommendations on the Habitats Regulations, and will tweak rather than remove the National Park duty. The Habitats Regulations protect our most precious spaces for nature and the National Park duty requires local authorities to contribute to the preservation of these beloved landscapes.
You can read The Wildlife Trusts’ response here. This welcomes the decision to keep essential environmental protections. But, there’s still a risk that continually tinkering with the implementation of these laws keeps nature vulnerable. These protections need to be strengthened, not reduced.
The work doesn’t end here. With your help, we will continue to raise these concerns in Parliament. The next step is supporting a parliamentary briefing for MPs on 15 April, hosted by Chris Hinchliff MP. We’ll be presenting the latest evidence showing that nature is already at a red line, and that policy decisions could push us beyond it.
Use this form to ask your MP to attend. Your MP will get a bespoke email depending on whether they stood up for nature during the Nuclear Regulatory Review or if they haven’t publicly spoken up for nature yet.
