Broken promises: new planning rules threaten nature and people.

Changes to planning rules could disconnect people from the natural world. This breaks several different promises that Government Ministers have made about bringing nature back to everyone.

Including nature in development from the start, is an easy way to create sustainable, healthy homes for everyone. This boosts productive, happy communities and neighbourhoods.

We have been asking for changes to the Planning and Infrastructure Bill to ensure housing and nature can work in harmony. But helpful solutions from experts, supported by tens of thousands of the public, and the Government’s own environmental watchdog have all been ignored. And all the amendments put forward to help nature have been refused.

So now, we are asking the Government to remove the whole section of the Bill that doesn’t work for people or wildlife: Part 3.

At this stage, removing Part 3 of the Bill is the only way Ministers can repair trust with nature groups and the public. It is also the best way the Government can meet its legal, policy and moral commitments.

In 2023, Rachel Reeves said she wanted to be 'Britain's first green Chancellor'. But now she has the role, she is threatening to ‘rip out’ environmental protections, and her plans are being backed by the Prime Minister. According to the Chancellor, Nature is a 'blocker' to growth. This isn’t true. Experts, Communities, scientific evidence and even Government advisers all agree a healthy environment is crucial for economic growth.  Please remind your MP about this. You can tell them why you think the promises made to everyone should be kept, too.

Remove Part 3 of the Bill - and save nature

Wild places need to be thriving again if public health is going to improve and if the economy is going to grow. Our shared love of nature is held dear by generations of residents, visitors and friends - from the greenest street trees to the high hedges of the countryside, from the blue waters of our coast to the Park duck ponds, from the air outside our windows to the tips of our mountains.

Get involved

We’ll help you find your MP. You can write your own message to add to ours. Your email will be copied to Rachel Reeves, Chancellor, so she can see which MPs are being contacted by their constituents. Through your messages, MPs and the Chancellor will learn about the different reasons behind why this matters to so many people.

You don’t have to add your own message if you don’t want to, but it will be more powerful if you do. Thank you!

It is vital that the Government understands a healthy environment IS a healthy society, and that this supports economic growth. When looking at new developments, natural spaces and green energy must be included in new housing developments and neighbourhoods.
